K&R Small Animal Sanctuary - Rescue, Rehabilitate, Rehome
K&R Small Animal Sanctuary was founded in March of 2009 by Rebecca and Kristin
when they realized that the small animal population of Wisconsin was
underrepresented by area rescues.  They came together to provide care and attention
for rabbits across the state, as well as education and assistance to individuals
looking to adopt.

Since their development, K&R Small Animal Sanctuary has become members of
Petfinder.com, and a member of AWARE, the Alliance of Wisconsin Animal Re-homing
Efforts, and PGAA, Pet Guardian Angels of America, which have increased adoptions
as well as increased the knowledge of the organization with members of the
community looking to adopt.  It has also given them the opportunity to work with other
rescue organizations to fight against animal homelessness in Wisconsin!

Today, K&R Small Animal Sanctuary is a thriving team made up of local and satellite
foster homes, transporters, 3 local veterinarians, participating pet stores, and
volunteers.  They have successfully teamed up with other area shelters such as MADACC, Local Humane Societies,
Luv A Paw, Angel Paws, Orphan Animal Rescue and Sanctuary, and many more to assist in re-homing their small
animals.  This allows these facilities to focus on the dogs and cats that need their assistance and lets K&R focus on
the rabbits!   K&R Small Animal Sanctuary does NOT have a facility that is open to the public as all animals are in
foster homes.  If you are interested in meeting one of the bunnies you see on the adoptions page, please use the
Contact Us! Button above and a volunteer will get back to you.

Our adoption fee is: $60 (single animal)/$100 (bonded pair)/$120 (bonded trio)

This is a non-refundable donation to K&R Small Animal Sanctuary and not a purchase price for the animal(s) or any supplies that are acquired and the donation can not be refunded for any reason.  Donations are used directly and immediately to rescue another rabbit in need and provide it with medical attention, training, and proper housing and therefore are not able to be re-disbursed.

Our Sanctuary Animals

All of these bunnies will be in our sanctuary likely for the remainder of their natural lives as they are in need of
extensive special care and multiple veterinary visits.  If you feel as though you may be able to provide adequate care
for any of these animals, feel free to email us.  Veterinary references will be required as well as extensive rabbit care
experience to be considered.  Even though these animals may not be able to be adopted out, their high level of cost
requires us to use a lot of donation money for their care.  Consider sponsoring one of these bunnies and being their
guardian angel! Your donation will not only cover their cost of care, but allow us to use other donations to save another
rabbit... Think of it as saving TWO rabbits with just one small donation!

Just $5.00 covers a month of bandaging materials for splints and braces.
$10.00 covers daily antibiotics and ointments.
$20.00 covers the monthly veterinary visit many of these animals require.
$50.00 covers the spay/neuter procedure or a set of x-rays.
$100.00 will pay for up to a year of basic care for our special babies!

Hi, my name is Walter!  I was born in March of 2009 and grew up outside in a breeders barn.
My family noticed I wasnt doing as well as my siblings and so they posted me on Craigslist free
to a good home.  Well the nice ladies at K&R Sanctuary found that ad and were scared about
what was going to happen to me.  They talked to my mom and adopted me... and my little
sister, Flipper, who is kinda like me!

When I came to the sanctuary I only had one leg that worked.  The other three all went the
wrong directions and I couldnt get around very good.  This picture on the left of me is when I
first came to the sanctuary.  As you can see... life wasnt so good. My mom had me checked
out by a vet the very next morning and they found out that my bones were shaped a little
funny.  My muscles didnt know how to compensate and the vet thought I might not have a life
worth living.  My mom disagreed because she had seen me eat a banana (I really really LOVE bananas... I get super
happy!) She knew I was happy even if I wasnt like a normal rabbit.  She gave me a chance.

Now I get splints put on my legs every day.  I sit pretty good for this but sometimes... well I would like to just be a
normal rabbit with normal legs so I put up a little fuss!  When I have my braces on though, I can hop around good asnew.  My one front arm cant be helped, the shoulder has no muscle attachment, but as long as I can hop Im happy! I almost hopped all the way out the top of my cage!  I think I am really happy that Becca and Kristin decided I was worth saving.  I think they are pretty special and I think some of the other bunnies here are pretty special too.  You should come and meet us.  We like to meet new people!  Here is a picture of me today... and the vet said Id never be happy...

Hi there!  I'm Flipper, although my name around here is Hypothetic because everyone
says "HI PATHETIC!!!"  My story is kind of like Walter's as I am his little sister.
When my mom inquired about Walter, my dad was also emailing the same lady trying
to surprise my mom by getting us for her.  Anyway, long story short, this is the
picture that the breeder sent my mom asking for her to take me too since I was
worse off than Walter.

What you see in that picture is about all I could do.  The lady who had me in her
barn was worried when I wasnt able to eat and was nice enough to bring me inside.
Here I was kept on a Rubbermaid lid in the family room and the daughter in the house would have to hold food and
water under me so I could eat.

Becca and Kristin came to pick me and Walter up and my mom almost started crying on the way home because she
noticed how uncomfortable I was the whole time.  Finally she took me out of the cage and held me in her lap the whole
way home.  When I went to the vet the next day, like Walter, he thought I didnt have a quality of life.  I didnt like the
sound of this and was worried what it meant.  My mom was so enamored with me though that she said she had to think
a little and took me home.  I knew what I had to do.  When mom would get me out to stretch my legs I would give her
kisses the whole time she was stretching my legs.  When she would pet my head I would nudge her back so she would
pet me more!  Then she introduced me to bananas.... I knew what I was born for!  I can eat an entire banana in one
sitting!  And I am smaller than a banana!  I even eat the peel.  They might be the best thing ever invented.

Well mom stretches my legs every day and I can get around pretty good now!  You should see me when she puts food in the cage.  I go FLYING across my playpen to get to the food dish!  I really like my brother too.  There are some things I cant do too well, like flip over, so my big brother Walter helps me out.  He is always there to snuggle with me and help me when I need help.  I know without my mom and my brother I wouldnt be happy like the vet said. Thanks to my mom, I think I am a pretty happy bunny and I wouldnt ask to be any different!  Here is a picture of me now happy and healthy!

Hello, My name is Snuffy.  My name was Snowball when I came here, but I had a really bad cold and was pretty stuffed
up so my name quickly became Snuffy instead.  When my cold finally

cleared up, my foster mom took me back to the vet and found out I had
a bad rash in my ear.  This was causing me to tilt my head to the side a
little, so we had to start putting drops in my ear which I really didnt like!
They made me shake my head all over and then I would fall down and lose
my balance and mom said I would "break dance"  I dont know what that
means but mom said she felt bad.

Finally those mean drops were done so I went back to the vet for another re-check.  Mom said something to the vet about my eyes and he started shining this light at me and poking things towards my face.  When he was done, they said I was blind.  I can tell light and dark, but I cant tell what is in front of me unless I can sniff it because my sniffer works REALLY well!

I dont know what being blind means, I guess Ive always been it.  When I run around mom says I am very "careful" but
she says my nose is really good.  Mom likes to hide my treat jar in different places in my bedroom but I ALWAYS find it
(She isnt very good at hiding things!)  There are these big bunnies that run around in my room sometimes too.  They
make this noise that mom says "no barking" about.... I dont think I can bark either.... I like those big bunnies though.
The one likes to kiss me even!

So anyway, that is my story.  I know I wouldnt have done very well at my old home, living in a barn, because I dont
think I would have gotten those really tasty medicines that my mommy gave me to make me feel better.  I think Ill be
here for awhile, and I know that means one less bunny will get to come live here, so I think you should help someone
else here go to a real home so that mommy can help another bunny like me.  Maybe when you come, you can even
come see my break-dance!!

Hi! I thought Id NEVER get my chance to tell my story!  My name is Bonnie!
I came to the sanctuary along with my brother Clyde when I was pretty young.
We came here when our breeder had some oops babies and couldnt sell us all.
The nice girls here took us and a bunch of our neighbors in and gave us a nice
warm inside home.  I was in a barn with some Chickens before.  I like being
inside better!

Well one day I was running in and out of my cage and my leg got stuck in my
ramp to my cage.  See, mom would wrap up the cage ramp, but my brother
Clyde likes to dig and he had pulled the pillow case off the door.  He really didnt know Id get hurt.  He felt really bad!
Mommy came down stairs later and she saw that I was hopping funny.  She picked me up and said "OH NO!" when she
saw my ankle.  She took me to the vet right away and got an x-ray.  We found out that my ankle was broken real bad,
and being a bunny, you cant cast a back leg.  So mom came up with a really nice splinting idea for me and would wrap
my leg up every day!  Daddy usually had to hold me because my ankle really hurt and I didnt like it getting all taped up
all the time.  I tried to be good but I just couldn't.

Well one day mommy was putting my brace back on and I pulled really hard.  I just didnt want it anymore.... apparently
that was a bad idea because next thing I know I am at the vet again!  Apparently I hurt my ankle worse and this time
my bones slipped behind my ankle.  The vet told my mommy to keep splinting it and hopefully it would just heal back up.

A couple days later the bone popped through the skin and I had to go back to the vet.  I had to have a surgery and had
to have part of my bone removed in my leg to make it heal back up.  Well now mommy has to splint my leg again, but because of my surgery I will be all better soon.  I am going to need lots more medical attention to make sure I dont need my leg amputated one day, but hopefully the ladies here at the sanctuary will keep me hopping for a long time!  Maybe some day I can even join my brother Clyde at a real home...but mommy says that will be awhile.  Maybe you can take my brother Clyde home and wait for me for someday?
